NACHA Operating Rules & Guidelines

The ACH Network is the driving force in new innovations and technology in the way consumers and businesses access, move and use their money. The NACHA Operating Rules & Guidelines is the foundation needed for every ACH payment. Understanding the Rules & Guidelines keeps your organization at the top of its field - ensuring efficient ACH payments, strengthening risk management practices and lessening returns and exceptions.

Access to the Rules & Guidelines helps identify new opportunities to leverage the ACH Network to meet customer’s needs, while maintaining a clear understanding of network requirements.

The Rules include the legal framework for the ACH Network, and the basic obligations of each ACH Network participant. Additionally, the included appendices contain details on Rules enforcement, annual audit requirements, a complete table of return reason codes and formatting specifications.

The Guidelines expands on the Rules, providing complete discussions of each ACH Network participant type and its role and responsibilities, detailed overviews of the Standard Entry Class Codes and use-case examples in special topic areas, such as Third-Party Service Providers.

Making life a little easier...ONE EDITION!

Beginning in 2019, and to align with the ever-changing landscape of the payments industry, the NACHA Operating Rules products will be offered as one edition only. This extends to the existing print, online resource and digital access formats. Providing only the full edition ensures all users receive complete and accurate information for compliance. This simplification will provide ACH participants the opportunity to reference the same information, eliminating confusion on the rights and obligations for their organization. It will also simplify user purchase options by eliminating the confusing choice between Rules editions.

Recommended Best Practice

ODFIs should continue to provide the Rules to Originators, transitioning to the Regular edition in 2019. WesPay recommends the online format that can be emailed to originators, saving on shipping costs. Additionally, the WesPay Originator Self-Assessment is a tool which helps Originators self-assess their compliance with the NACHA Operating RulesFind out more about this tool, or contact us for a demo at marketing@wespay.org.
